Things to do in Bangkok with kids
Thailand for kids. Top family things to do in Thailand with Kids:
- River boat around the Chao Praya River
Taking one of the longtail boats or larger “Water-Taxis” that cruise from one side of the river to the other is great fun for kids! Colorful passengers and cargo with monks and tourists, and other kids are usually on board. The boats run all day and you can hop on and hop off at many stops, including temples, shops and parks.
- Khao San Road in the evening
At night, this famous Backpackers hub can get very loud and crowded, but during the “golden hour” just at sunset, the road is perfect for families. This all pedestrian street is full of shops, amazing restaurants off all kinds that have sidewalk-cafe style dining (yes there is even a McDonalds on the road now.) and Pad Thai noodle carts. Browse hundreds of shops and street stalls, do the Fish Spa (see below) have drinks and dinner outside while watching the kids play with locals and other travelers. This is Not Pot Pong Road, which you do not want to take the kids to.
- Siam World Ocean Aquarium
Paragon Siam Shopping Center. This huge aquarium is a fun day for the entire family. Inside a huge shopping mall complex, this massive aquarium rivals any you’ve been to. Great for a full day outing, plus nearby shops, movies and restaurants at the mall.
- Wat Po Temple
Still one of our favorites. Less crowded than the Royal Palaces. Kids will be amazed at the huge reclining Buddha and maze of colorful stupas and temples with rows of golden Bhuddas. If you time it right, you can see throngs of monks chanting in one of the temples.
- Tuk Tuk Ride
Our boys love Tuk Tuks! Get a real sense of adventure and get around cheap in these fun classic Asian transport vehicles. If you’re on the cautious side, perhaps only take them by day. Remember to only take marked official taxis and check if the meter is running. For Tuk Tuks, negotiate the price before getting in.
- Floating Market
Located outside of Bangkok this amazing, and touristy maze of waterways is a fun and adventurous way to do some shopping for trinkets and souvenirs. Try to avoid the massive tour bus crowds by going later in the day. Remember, if you point to something, the seller will hook your boat and pull you over to bargain.
- Grand Palace
Major Bangkok landmark and impressive to kids (tell them grand stories of kings and gold before you go) This was the palace of the King for over 150 years. Massive buildings and temple stupas adorned in wild colors and gold Buddhas. Strict dress code and long lines at the ticket office. Try to avoid the tour bus crowds.
- Fish Spa
The latest craze last time we were in town. The Fish Spa is a big tank that you sit at the edge of, and millions of little fish nibble all the dead skin off your feet! The kids loved this and wanted to do it again and again. The Khao San Road Fish Spa’s are open air, so we could get a street side Thai massage or dinner while watching the kids laugh and giggle as the fish cleaned their gross travelers feet. Its cheap too!
- Noodle Carts
Street Side Pad Thai noodle carts are a fun and very cheap way to get lunch or dinner for the family. We found the best on Khao San Road. A heaping plate costs 30 Baht (one US dollar) and the kids can pick out their noodles, vegs and sauces. The cart lady cooks it fresh before your eyes! Yum!
- Amusement Parks
There are dozens of full on amusement parks in and around Bangkok. There are flight simulators, surf rider wave machines, Madame Tussuad’s Wax Museum, Siam Park, Leoland (not Lego) Water Park, Fantasia Lagoon, Dream World, Mansion 7 and many more! There are also Zoo’s butterfly and snake farms.
- Ancient City
Take a day trip out to the Ancient City park. Replicas of Thailand’s most famous sites including the Grand Palace and many other huge temples. Or you could just go to Ayutthaya itself. However, Ancient City has golf carts which is great with kids when its really hot.
