RVing with Kids: Multigenerational Travel in Amazing Settting

We’ve only had the opportunity to hit the road by RV a couple times while filming for Travel With Kids, but I have to say, it does make travel easy while trekking to some pretty interesting destinations. Our last trip brought us to the wilds of Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula. This trip, we headed to Catalina State Park in Tucson, Arizona for a little fun in the sun.

One bonus of RVing is that there is plenty of space. So, we invited the grandparents to tag along and we filmed it all. Check out our video of the RV trip. Having grandparents along offers the kids’ special bonding time that is hard to get at home as they bunk up together. And, it offers all of us some incredible experiences in the great outdoors…hiking, biking and relaxing together.

Another nice thing about being in an RV is you literally take the kitchen sink with you. So, there’s no hustle and bustle in the morning, trying to herd the kids to a restaurant for breakfast, or attempting to make a pseudo breakfast in a kitchenette. No, we made piping hot pancakes and fresh squeezed juice (and later in the day, cookies hot from the oven) and enjoyed a leisurely morning with beautiful vistas. And, with the majestic backdrop of the Catalina mountains soaring behind us, we awoke to breakfast in the outdoors, which according to Buela (Grandma) “makes everything taste better”.

After breakfast, we headed out on a hike, and the trailhead was just steps from the RV. The easy dirt paths made it easy to explore the amazing desert scenery – cacti in shapes straight from the page of Dr. Seuss, giant boulders, soaring mountains – and the boys love finding little creatures hiding in the rocks and bushes. We meet other families along the way. One told us about a petting zoo down the road and a bee keeper’s hive…something the kids were eager to check out. So we headed over and pet zebras and ostriches and the bee keeper lets us put on bee suits and check out the hive; a great experience for the whole family!

In the afternoon, we play some touch football near the RV and the kids explore a bit with the grandparents while we get in a little relaxation time. After a beautiful sunset – complete with s’mores (you can’t camp without them can you?), we play family board games and swap stories – the kids get a real kick out of their dad’s childhood stories as told by Dad and Poppi (Grandpa) – and then it’s time to hit the hay, which is easy since we are all right there. The kids can head to bed early leaving us plenty of time to catch up with the grandparents and talk about all the exciting things that lay in store for us tomorrow.
