RV Vacation Part 2: Outdoor Fun
One of the nicest things about traveling by RV, aside from the ease of travel…having your kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom right along with you…is the places you can go! On our recent trip to film our RV adventure in the Catalina Mountains in Tucson, we were able to park right at the base of the mountains with adventure on our doorstep.
On our first morning we hiked through the mountains, taking in the amazing scenery – cacti in all sorts of unique shapes backed by soaring mountains. Seamus wanted to stop at every rock to check out the creatures hiding beneath. And he found everything from spiders to worms from scorpions to beetles. The trails were perfect for families…not too steep, but winding through fabulous scenery and with just the right amount of variation. But the really nice part was the RV was parked near by. So after the hike, we could wash the mud off….hey, we have two boys – when taking a hike, mud is a given….and get a snack before continuing on the adventure.
On our second day, we wanted to explore a bit further so we decided to go by bike. Another nice part about RVing is that there is plenty of room to bring all those toys from home. So, we hauled out the bikes and took off down sandy trails…yes, we got stuck a few times – I can only pedal so fast in sand and then I just fall over – but it was lots of fun. We rode through treed areas and the boys pretended they were some sort of video game while I relaxed and took in the views.
Finally, on the third day, we amped up the horse power to well, literally horse power. There is an area at the RV park for horse camping. And, in the evenings at the RV park often times fellow campers will get to know each other. A warm greeting on a sunset stroll may turn into a shared s’more later. We met one lady who had horses and offered to let the boys take them out for a trot. They had a great time riding them around the dirt paths and pretending to be cowboys…yee-haw!
As we watched the sun go down on that third night, burgers sizzling on the grill, the sun turning the mountains behind our RV a burnt shade of orange, and other campers strolling by to say hello, I realized what a great community this was sharing the adventure together on this RV trip.
