Pizza Around the World
Whether you like thin crust or thick crust, lots of cheese or no cheese, tomato sauce or garlic and oil, pizza is a universal food popular throughout the world. Through our family travels, we have had the opportunity to try pizzas in everywhere from the origination in Italy to the remote outskirts of Asia. Here are the best pizzas we have found:
Cusco, Peru
I don’t know whether it’s the altitude in Cusco or a particular ingredient they add to the dough, but the crust on pizzas we’ve had in restaurants around the Plaza de Armas, the main square of Cusco, are bubbly and doughy making heaven to hold the toppings. Wash it down with a Cuscqueno and you’re on top of the world!
Hanoi, Vietnam
French baking lends itself to the light, fluffy and buttery crusts of the pizza in Hanoi, Vietnam! The French also introduced gourmet cheeses, which means a blend of toppings that combine with tantalizing results. Top that with Asia chili sauce and you have a uniquely Vietnamese pizza!
New York City
New York is famous for its pizza that’s for sure. And big battles over which is the original Ray’s or best pizza in town are always a part of the conversation when you talk to New Yorkers about it. Pizza stands like this one serve up huge, steaming hot thin crust pizzas with a chewy crust and gooey cheese. The other big debate…eat it open or folded?
Fiji
I don’t know if its the sea air, the fact that you get to make your own, or the wood-fired oven that made the pizza so good in Fiji, but whatever it was it was fantastic! The kids used lots of garlic and some tropical ingredients to make it Fiji-licious!
Italy
No post about pizza would be complete without mentioning the inventors of the delicious feast itself…Italy! The pizza there gets our highest marks! It’s crisp, thin crust is topped with light sauce and the perfect blend of cheese and herbs. We loved eating at outdoor cafes like this one, da Baffetto, near Piazza Navona in Rome.
