Foodie and Family: They Can Travel Together in Peru
Peruvian cuisine has a very unique mix of exotic and traditional. Although dishes like cuy (guinea pig)…
…which the locals eat regularly, steal the tourist show as a novelty, other dishes like roasted corn, lomo saltado, chifa, deep fried potatoes, and ceviche is where the real taste is. Foodies will love the street food in Peru, but picky-eaters will also love the pizza. I don’t know whether it’s the altitude in Cusco, Peru or a special ingredient, but the pizza crust is just the right combo of chewy and crispy and if you travel with your kids to Peru, they will be delighted to dive in.
Many of the restaurants overlook the town square in Cusco and other cities in Peru. This provides built-in entertainment for the kids and a viewing point for adults if kids want to run around and get some energy out.
Some also have live traditional music, which is another entertainment factor for the kids and helps everyone immerse in the rich Incan culture of Peru.
Once they’ve had a taste of Peruvian pizza, perhaps you can get them to venture into other dishes as well…our kids particularly liked the chifa, which is a fusion of Chinese-style fried rice using Peruvian ingredients and spices. Ceviche was another favorite.
But, the bucket list dish for most foodie family travelers to Peru is lomo saltado, which is skillet fried beef with onions, peppers and tomatoes. And kids will appreciate again, it’s usually served with french fries. We’ve shared a Lomo Saltado Recipe here.
