Family Travel Destinations: People and Places We Miss Most while in Coronavirus Lockdown
In this unprecedented time with countries locking down, closing borders to entry, and people being asked to stay home due to coronavirus, we are missing family travel more than usual. How does the old adage go? You always want most what you can’t have? Well, we want it! And so do our kids! And, we worry for all the friends we have made in our travels and hope they are staying healthy. So, we thought we’d put together a list of places we are missing most right now (aka our favorite places). Each of us picked the top three places we’d go if we could travel right now.
South Africa – Carrie, Jeremy, Nathan, Seamus (All four of us picked this one, that shows how much we love it there!!)
It’s not just about the animals…although we do love them, and we hear that they are missing us with the absence of people in game reserves! But, the people of South Africa are incredible; resilient, funny, welcoming, energetic. We love to hear their stories of South Africa history, we love to hear them sing and watch them dance – and they love to laugh when they get us to try their dance moves. Plus, there are breakfasts and happy hours in the African bush, diving with great white sharks, safari game drives, hearing lions roar at night, visiting kids in Soweto, and so much more!
Fiji – Carrie
With all this indoor time, the great expanse of nature is calling. The white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and the very welcoming “Bula” spirit of the people of Fiji sounds like just the place to take my coronavirus blues away!
Peru – Carrie
Since I was supposed to be leading a group trip of adults only (Travel Without Kids…what?!?) right now, this was an easy pick for me. I am so sad not to be there visiting one of my favorite cities in the world: Cusco. The white washed buildings, cobble stone streets, and vast plazas, the clash of civilizations apparent in the many Inca stone foundations of the buildings, the friendly locals in traditional dress, the colorful festivals…oh how I miss Peru!
Zanzibar – Jeremy
Nothing like watching a dhow – a traditional wooden sailing ship – glide past as you relax on the white sand beaches of Zanzibar. Plus, the islands boasts a rich history, unique culture, and incredible markets!
Vietnam – Seamus
Ha Long bay has the coolest rock formations and you get to kayak, explore caves, visit floating villages, and more. Hanoi has colorful markets and the vendors and so nice, and funny! The beaches in Hoi An are amazing and the town is fun at night…colorful lanterns hang across narrow walkways and float in the river. Plus, I love pho!
Cambodia – Jeremy
Angkor Wat…well, it’s Angkor Wat: giant, breathtaking, marvel of a world wonder! Then, there’s the white sand beaches, the monks in colorful orange robes, the delicious food, the romance of the Mekong, the interesting, if somewhat turbulent history.
Thailand – Nathan
Giant gold Buddha statues, jungles filled with elephants, excellent scuba diving in turquoise waters with cool limestone rock formations, kayaking, rock climbing, adventure courses, super friendly monks donning bright orange robes and big smiles…well, smiles everywhere really…there’s a reason it’s called “The Land of Smiles”…these are just a few of the reasons I wish I were in Thailand!
A Plane to Anywhere! – Seamus
I just want that feeling of heading out on an adventure…hopping a plane to somewhere far away to meet new people, immerse in a new culture, and explore!
Well, that’s our list folks. What would you add? While we are dreaming of places far away and exotic, we are home enjoying being together and planning for another day and another destination! #WeWillTravelAgain
