Soaring High Above: Sacred Valley Zip Lining on Family Adventure Trip in Peru
When most people think of the Sacred Valley in Peru, they think of ancient Inca sites, terraced mountain sides, and, of course, Machu Picchu. But, family travelers might be interested in another aspect of travel in this area of Peru, adventure! Think staying in a glass capsule room perched on a cliff high above the valley floor, white water rafting amid giant boulders, or zip lining hundreds of feet above the terraced landscape with views of the Andes as your backdrop. Looking for things to do with kids in Peru? Read on.
Located about one hour outside of Cusco, the zip lines are easy to reach for those traveling the Cusco – Machu Picchu route. And, if the kids are Inca ruin-ed and Spanish church-ed out, it’s a great way for the whole family to get an adrenaline fix and re-energize for the rest of the trip! Companies like Dos Manos Peru offer full day packages out of Cusco, Ollaytatambo, or Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo).
After contemplating the view with a local Inca who is herding her goats, it’s time for a safety lesson and to get suited up. Everyone seems a bit nervous at first…the lines are high and crisscross the surrounding mountains hundreds of feet above the Sacred Valley.
At first, everyone chooses the regular zip line sitting pose and timidly set out with a few seemingly forced “woo-hoos”…
…but, once the initial shock wears off, people try some of the more unique poses the guides offer us: superman (as pictured above) and spiderman and bird poses (below) are some of the favorites.
In the video, you can see how far across the zip lines go on this crazy family adventure travel activity in the Sacred Valley
In all honestly though, it was the kids who were the most adventurous in trying the crazy poses. Although a few of us may have gotten dared into trying one or two…
And after it was all over, there was much celebrating…
and looking forward to our next stop: Machu Picchu!
